What Is An Allergy?
Basically stated, allergies are an immune system reaction. The immune system of a person with an allergy reacts to ordinary, everyday substances much in the same way it reacts to viruses and bacteria. When a person with allergies comes in contact with something that is an allergen to them, their immune system overreacts to it, resulting in a variety of allergy symptoms, like sneezing, itching, hives, and more.
What Are Some Of The Most Prevalent Allergies?
Somebody, somewhere probably has an allergy to nearly any imaginable substance or creature, but there are allergens that are seen more commonly than others.
- Food allergy; food allergies are common among several dietary staple foods (and some less common foods, as well). Intolerance to lactose can cause a milk allergy. Another frequently seen food allergy is a peanut allergy due to wrong Food Recipes, or allergy to other nuts. Peanut allergies can be particularly strong in some people and extra caution may be necessary. Many people suffer with a wheat allergy, and/or gluten allergy, ruling out basic yeast breads and many other products from the diet.
- Allergies to animals; a large number of people suffer with allergies to animals. Cat allergies and dog allergies are some of the most often diagnosed animal allergies (perhaps because of the large amount of exposure people everywhere have to them). People who own dogs with allergies may be best off finding a new home for their pet, but this is not always the only option. Reducing time spent with dogs, or researching types of dogs for people with allergies makes it possible for allergic dog lovers to still reap the benefits of pet ownership with man’s best friend.
- Environmental allergies; pollen, grass, flowers, mold, and mildew are just a few of many environmental culprits. There is a bright side, though - most environmental allergies are only suffered seasonally.
- Latex allergy; latex allergies are being seen more and more often; Latex allergies are often diagnosed as the result of a doctor’s visit during which latex medical gloves are used. Latex is also found in some kinds of balloons and other household products.
Allergies can be just an annoyance or can be life threatening, but earning how to live with allergies is essential to a safe and good quality of life.
